Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police state preliminary tests show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
