Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
