Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
