EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
